Delegating to an AI agent is a learnable skill — and most business owners haven't learned it yet. The bottleneck isn't the technology. It's the briefing. - Review trigger — At what point do you want to see progress or sign off before it continues? This is your oversight checkpoint, not a sign of distrust. It's just good workflow design.
The constraint layer is where most new delegators fail. They give the goal but skip the guardrails, and the agent optimises for something adjacent to what they wanted. Platforms like Snowflake's SnowWork enforce access controls automatically — the agent can only touch data it's been granted permission to see — but you still need to define what constitutes a good outcome.
Scope for Asynchronous Work
One of the biggest mindset shifts is accepting that agents do their best work when you're not watching. That sounds obvious, but in practice most people either hover (checking in constantly, interrupting the workflow) or completely disappear (no checkpoints, then surprise at the result).
The sweet spot is structured asynchrony: define clear handoff points where the agent pauses and surfaces output for your review before continuing to the next phase. Think of it like a project with staged milestones, not a task with a single output. A useful rule of thumb: any workflow that spans more than two hours or involves a decision with meaningful downstream consequences should have at least one structured review point built in.
This also means scoping tasks at the right granularity. "Manage our marketing calendar" is not a delegatable agent task — it's a role. "Draft next week's three LinkedIn posts based on our content pillars and last month's top-performing formats" is. The more bounded the task, the cleaner the review, and the faster you build trust in the output.
What to Review (and What to Skip)
Effective delegation isn't just about what you hand off — it's about what you check when it comes back. Reviewing every word the agent produces defeats the purpose. But rubber-stamping without review creates quality risk.
A useful frame: review outputs at the decision layer, not the execution layer. If the agent wrote five product descriptions, you don't need to rewrite them from scratch — you're checking whether the tone is right, the claims are accurate, and the call to action is on-brand. If it ran a financial analysis, you're checking whether the assumptions it made align with how your business actually works, not re-doing the arithmetic.
- Always review: anything customer-facing, anything involving commitments (contracts, pricing, deadlines), and anything where the agent had to make a judgement call it wasn't explicitly trained for
- Spot-check: recurring tasks where you've reviewed several cycles and quality is consistent
- Trust and skip: formatting, structural tasks, data transformation where the logic is transparent
When Things Go Wrong
Every agent workflow eventually produces something unexpected. The question is whether you've designed the process to catch it, or whether it ships. We often see two failure modes in teams that are new to agent delegation.
The first is scope drift — the agent interprets the goal more broadly than intended and starts doing adjacent things you didn't ask for.
